Telltale Games was founded in July 2004 by three former LucasArts developers (Kevin Bruner, Dan Connors and Troy Molander) after said company took a hiatus from making adventure games. Based in San Rafael, California, Telltale developed a proprietary game engine that would be used in every game they made into the late 2010s; this was the Telltale Tool, which debuted in Telltale's first game 'Telltale Texas Hold'em', released in February 2005. Their most popular games by the turn of the 2000s included the 'Sam & Max' series (2006-10), based on the characters by Steve Purcell, 'Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People' (2008) and 'Tales of Monkey Island' (2009), the latter of which was part of the LucasArts 'Monkey Island' series that began in 1990. The Strong Bad game from 2008 caught the attention of Robert Kirkman, the co-creator of 'The Walking Dead' comic book series; that was adapted as an episodic graphic adventure video game by Telltale in 2012, which instantly became their most successful game as many more 'Walking Dead' games were created as the decade rolled on. In 2015, Telltale Games helped various developers to publish their games under the 'Telltale Publishing' name, an example of which is the survival horror video game '7 Days to Die' (2016), developed by the Fun Pimps. This would last until September 2018, the month that saw Telltale Publishing release the trailer of 'Stranded Deep' on 21st September. Whilst Telltale Games was releasing 'The Walking Dead: The Final Season', a 'majority studio closure' was announced on 21st September 2018 and they would became defunct less than a month later. Skybound Games, who collaborated with Telltale's Walking Dead series since development in 2011, released the last half of 'The Walking Dead: The Final Season' in early 2019. LCG Entertainment, Inc. started to acquire many of Telltale's former assets in mid 2019, and they would later set their trade name as 'Telltale Games' which saw them bring back the Telltale logo from around 2004. At the Game Awards 2019, Telltale announced a sequel to their popular episodic adventure game 'The Wolf Among Us' (2013-14), which saw trailers of the game be uploaded to their YouTube channel in December 2019 and February 2022 - the game is still in development as of mid 2025. Their latest game is 'The Expanse: A Telltale Series' which was co-developed by them with Deck Nine from July to September 2023.
